  • STM Achieves ISO 14001:2015 Certification, Strengthens Environmental Management Commitment

Jakarta, 23 January 2024 – PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM) through its Sustainability Department has successfully achieved International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001:2015 Environmental Management System certification. This certification proves STM’s seriousness in achieving a balance between environmental preservation, community welfare, and economic sustainability through the implementation of good management practices.

ISO 14001:2015 is a global recognition for organizations, in business, government and non-profit sectors, of their environmental sustainability performance. It defines the requirements for environmental management systems that help organizations identify, manage, reduce and, if possible to eliminate their negative impacts on the environment. STM proud to have achieved this certification, despite still being at the mining exploration stage.

“Usually other companies will take care of this certification when they are already in production. However, STM tries to implement the certification from the beginning, even though we are still at the mining exploration stage. We want all teams who involved in our projects to be aware of this standard and implement it together,” said STM Sustainability and External Affairs Manager, Razky Akbar, who received the certificate in Jakarta on Thursday (23/1).

All stages of STM’s ISO 14001:2015 certification were conducted with the British Standards Institution (BSI), an international certification Institution. ASEAN Managing Director of BSI Group, Emmanuel Herve, said that standardization is important during running organizational processes. He also congratulated STM for successfully completing this certification.

“Through this international certification, we can learn from other countries, to ensure we meet potential regulations, and make us more recognized. However, these certificates are not simply given out. Organizations must go through a several processes and meet rigorous assessments from auditors. We congratulate STM on its success!” said Emmanuel.

The implementation of a systematic environmental management system enables companies to better identify and manage environmental impacts, including emission reduction, energy use efficiency, and optimal waste management. With this certification, STM not only fulfill international standards but also demonstrates its contribution in supporting sustainable development in the mining sector in Indonesia.

PT Sumbawa Timur Mining launches 2024 Village Participation Program

Dompu, January 13, 2025 – PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM) has officially commenced the handover of the Village Participation Program (PPD) to eight villages in Hu’u District and two villages in Pajo District, all located in Dompu Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province (NTB). The allocated budget for the 2024 PPD amounts to approximately IDR 1.83 billion, focusing on healthcare, economic development, and education.

The PPD fund serves as PT STM’s support for the Village Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMDes), which is determined through village deliberations. Each village has its own priority programs. For instance, Cempi Jaya Village has agreed to use the PPD funds for equipping posyandu (integrated health service posts), revitalizing early childhood education centers (PAUD), constructing public toilets, and building retaining walls (bronjong). The entire PPD implementation will be carried out by professional partners agreed upon by PT STM and the village government.

At the PPD handover event in Hu’u Village (January 13), PT STM’s Community Development Team, Vovia Witni, expressed hope that this support would be utilized optimally for its intended purposes. She emphasized the importance of maintaining and managing the assistance collectively. “For recipients of mini kiosk aid, for example, please use it to run a business and improve your family’s economy. If it is not utilized, we will reallocate it to other residents who need it more,” she stated.

Regarding group-based assistance, Witni mentioned that PT STM and the village government would establish agreements on ownership status to prevent individual claims. “This category of support is intended for group benefits. We would be delighted if the provided assistance could be sustainably beneficial to the community,” she explained.

The Secretary of Hu’u Village, Johan, welcomed PT STM’s support through the 2024 PPD. He acknowledged that STM’s contributions extend beyond PPD, encompassing various other community programs. He encouraged residents to make wise use of this support. “As beneficiaries, let’s maximize this assistance to gain greater benefits for economic improvement and human resource development,” he urged.

He also reaffirmed Hu’u Village’s commitment to supporting PT STM’s activities. He noted that PT STM’s presence has significantly contributed to the local community and infrastructure development in Hu’u District, leading to noticeable economic growth, especially through job creation. “As Hu’u residents, we have a responsibility to safeguard this investment so it can continue to grow. After all, we are the ones who will feel its impact,” Johan emphasized.

Meanwhile, Jala Village Head, Sadam Husain, expressed appreciation for PT STM’s support in community development through PPD. “There are many programs we have agreed upon and funded through the 2024 PPD, including the procurement of a three-wheeled motorbike for waste transportation. We will make full use of this assistance and maintain it properly,” said Sadam.

The PPD handover is carried out in stages for each recipient village. All support provided by PT STM under PPD is not given in cash, but rather through agreed-upon programs. PT STM, together with the village government, oversees the program implementation to ensure long-term benefits for the community.

Fraud Attempts in the name of Hu’u Project, PT Sumbawa Timur Mining, and Vale Public: urged to beware and verify

Jakarta, Juni 2024: PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (“STM”) again urges the public to remain vigilant against parties claiming affiliation or having a working relationship (whether directly or indirectly) with STM and its shareholders (in this case, Vale and Antam) regarding copper mining exploration activities currently conducted by STM in Dompu Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province (hereinafter referred to as the “Hu’u Project”).

STM management also emphasizes that STM is the sole legitimate concession holder based

on the Contract of Work related to the development of the Hu’u Project. The implementation of these activities is supervised by the Indonesian Government and is ensured to comply with applicable laws and regulations.

Cindy Elza, STM’s Principal Communication explained that recently they have frequently received complaints and requests for confirmation from the public regarding the project. “Complaints are received through the company’s official email and WhatsApp channels about offers for goods/services procurement, conditioned on providing a commitment fee ranging from hundreds of millions to billions of rupiah. These offers come from parties claiming involvement in the Hu’u Project development and using identities similar to (or resembling) STM and Vale”.

STM reiterates that PT Abdi Karya Usaha Raya (AKUR), PT STM Vale Hu’u – Vale Global Group (PT STM VH VGG), PT Main Cone Vale Global, PT Vale Global Group (PT Vale GG), and PT SVH – VGG are not affiliated with STM and Vale, and are not involved in managing the Hu’u Project (whether directly or indirectly).

“STM and its shareholders in managing the Hu’u Project uphold the principles of anti-corruption and integrity. Therefore, we never request or stipulate a commitment fee requirement in the goods/services procurement process for any reason. This also applies to the manpower recruitment process,” Cindy emphasized.

Cindy also inform that STM has provided a hotline for the public who wish to verify or report suspicious information or suspected fraud in the name of STM, Vale, and the Hu’u Project through the email address infoSTM1@vale.com or WhatsApp at 0811.1911.0638.

In recent years, STM has also actively and routinely disseminated this information to prevent public losses. In conclusion, Cindy added, “To protect STM’s legal interests, the Company will not hesitate to use all available legal means against anyone engaging in such fraudulent activities,”

In this activity, STM representatives together with the school, including students, will plant dozens of tree seedlings around the school area,” says Razky Akbar, Sustainability & External Affairs Manager of STM, in Dompu, Wednesday (5/6).

World Environment Day is celebrated every June 5. Led by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the 2024 commemoration has the theme “Accelerating Land Restoration, Addressing Desertification, and Increasing Resilience to Drought.” This theme highlights the importance of immediately restoring degraded land, fighting desertification, and increasing drought resilience. By promoting sustainable land management practices, the initiative aims to revitalize ecosystems, ensure food security, and support the livelihoods of communities that depend on these lands, ultimately contributing to a healthier and more resilient planet. STM also adopts the theme.

This year’s World Environment Day is commemorated by STM on Saturday, 8 June 2024, at the Hu’u Project site in Nangadoro. A number of STM employees and contractors’ representatives made dozens of biopore holes installations. According to Razky, the biopore installations also function as water absorption holes which help to fertilize the soil, prevent flooding, and balance water levels in the soil. This step is in line with the theme of World Environment Day 2024.

“Vertical holes with a diameter of around 10 – 25 cm can be used to deposit organic waste and stimulate soil biota to create cavities in the soil, thereby facilitating water infiltration into the soil. This is one of the approaches taken by STM to maintain its commitment to the environment. The company continues to rehabilitate land that has been used for exploration activities,” he explains.

Razky says further that STM is committed to continuing to do its best for the sustainability of the environment and ecosystem. This is in line with one of the company’s visions, which is to create a sustainable future.
